Granite Cleaning after removing POP

Post by msananthu »

Hi All,

After laying granite (it's a white type of granite with lavender dots), had POP layered on it. A week back removed the POP and see that there are couple of stain marks of oil and some yellow stains. The stain mark of oil is due to wood turning machinery which was used in the site. However the yellow stain is inexplicable.

Does anybody know how to remove these stains, any stone protection products in the markets which can be used ?

Regards

We also have used similar granite (gang saw) and have few spots where painters dropped enamel paint ( the one which is used for painting windows). This has left marks and is not coming off with traditional cleaning methods. http://www.stonera.com/ has office in HSR layout and they seem to be selling all international brand products related to stones. I am planning to visit here for 1. Cleaning the affected area and 2. Buying some good sealant which will protect the stone from further marks.

We have shifted to new house due to anavoidable circumstances but there is some amount of work still left (interiors, painting, grouting). I am planning to visit them once these things are done (in abt a months time)

Hi ,
Cleaning of stains from granite or marble is all possible as long as they are on the surface .Any stain that sinks in to the stone is next to impossible with any chemical .
Oil stains on white granite is a risk of sinking in to the granite and the chance of taking it out is 10 -20% max .Yellow stains on white granite is called rusting , i am doubting its the same in your case, would be better if you can upload a pic of the same for better understanding .

Cement mortar will never make any stains on any stone surface since it doesn't have any color pigmentation in it.paint, cem marks can be removed easily on granite using mild acid (caution using acid intensity) based floor cleaners .
I suggest other members to upload the before and after pics and method u used to remove them .This will help others largely .

Best results occur when you seal your white stone from below using a fluropolymer coating like hitek SG plus or marble wonder plus and then lay. This seals the stone completely and discoloration is prevented.
After it is laid ,pop is removed \surface is cleaned , Seal your white stone with Tenax Proseal ( this provides a olea phobic and hydrophobic surface, non wet look ideal for white stones). Tenax Ager is also a stone sealer , ideal for dark stones , provides a wet look.
As per cleaning surface stains , neutral ph ( non alkali\acid) cleaner like maxclean from hitek works great.
Application is simple , simply apply the chemical with cotton cloth and wipe the excess.

Hi Nivas,

That helps a lot. Where can we buy the chemicals you listed? We did'nt know to apply the SG Plus before laying, we just laid it with white cement, so is it ok to apply Tenax Proseal? will it be still effective?

Thanks,
Santosh

Hi Nivas,
Very good information on granite related issues,
I understand that the granite layer use acid wash for faster cleaning of POP upon completing the lay. One of the granite dealer advised not to use the acid wash for cleaning, which he thinks the quality will deteriorate, Can you please suggest what cleaning agent be used to clean the granite upon completion of laying.
thanks
