1. Steel meshes are available at a few shops in City market area. I did procure from a shop on SJP Road by the side of the Masjid - Jain Wire Netting Stores. Meshes are generally sold for a minimum length of 1 mtr. x 1 mtr. For smaller width, you may have to pay a premium, and sometimes may not be sold. For mosquito mesh, it would be generally available at most shops selling aluminum window parts.

The 75 micron 304 SS fine mesh of the size 12 inch x 12 inch is now available for retail sale at a price of Rs.230 plus 18% GST at the following shop in Bengaluru:

As per newspaper report published a few months ago titled “Bengaluru's water a deadly drink”, “Poison in your tap: Sip faecal flow, metal mix”.

Bengalurean’s are consuming highly contaminated water as pathogens have invaded BWSSB taps and bore wells alike. A set of 150 groundwater samples from areas across the city showed the presence of mercury, nickel, magnesium, aluminium and nitrate. “At first, the dependency on bore well water needs to stop immediately”. Also micro-plastic is an emerging concern.

Hence, it is better for everyone who has a roof over his head to seriously consider Rainwater Harvesting for storage and direct use. It is in our hands to keep our rooftop clean.

Rains have stopped. Pre-monsoon rains will start in the second half of May. We have about four months in our hand to be prepared for harvesting the rains.

It is wise to prepare for war during peace. Similarly, this is the right time to start making your EFFECTIVE rainwater harvesting filter so that you do not miss out on rains. Moreover, even during March and April there will be showers when the temperature goes up.

Harvest the rains and use the purest water!

The outer paint bucket of larger size is very difficult to get. Hence, many have requested for alternative container that may be sourced from the market.

I have tried out a 25 liter bucket available in the market, costing a little over Rs.200. These buckets cannot withstand direct sunlight. Hence they should necessary be placed in shade.

This bucket also looks new and decent compared to used paint buckets. At the bottom of this bucket, a round hole is cut so as to snugly fit in the 75mm PVC collar and the collar is pasted using an adhesive as already explained.
Here is a picture of the PVC collar fitted bucket, along with Type 2 inner bucket with mesh pasted.

Keeping the terrace relatively free from impurities helps in collecting purer rainwater and also reduces the load on the filter.

It is fairly easy to remove bigger impurities by sweeping, etc. But fine dust gets deposited frequently and is also not easily amenable to sweeping.

One may use a vacuum cleaner, but since the area to be covered is fairly large, it takes a long time and also consumes lot of electricity.

I have tried using a dedicated blower (not the blower in the vacuum cleaner) and I am happy with the results. The time consumed is much lesser and the power consumed is also very reasonable. Further, it can take care of the nooks and corners which are generally not amenable to sweeping and also to vacuum cleaner. Moreover, one can blow the dust on the parapet wall, etc.

Please note that blower should be of good quality. Hence use only a good one of reputed brand. Also, the blower should be used as per the instructions of the manufacturer.

You may blow the dust to some corner and remove the same using a dustpan. You may direct the dust to more than one corner depending upon your terrace size and structure and remove the same.

This way, removing fine dust would be more convenient. If anyone has any simple and better method, please suggest.

An easy way to clean the filter mesh:

An easy way to clean the filter mesh fixed to the bucket is by using a health faucet jet. It is preferable to have one installed near the filter system.

By directing the water jet against the mesh from inside and outside, the filter mesh can be cleaned quickly, effectively and with use of least quantity of water.

Further, the water used for cleaning the mesh may be applied to plants.
