yes, the glass used is toughened glass, but still the grill work needs to be tight enough for security reasons. Yes, Brahmasthan is a good place for the skylight. We have one in that location and our entire house gets good light for most part of the day.

The sky light is an excellent idea for people like me who like a lot of natural light. Can somebody tell me if there is some way by which natural light can be brought to a floor when there is a floor above it.

@pvr59ksl - look for "sun tunnels". I have seen this with a vendor at koramangala. It is not a substitute for a skylight, as skylights bring in more light, but can be considered as a source for natural light.

I have a question on ventilation and skylight. Is there a ventilation open space required on first floor immediately above the ground floor hall for a duplex house. Architect is saying it will help ventilation in future when houses come up all the sides. However, I was not very convinced. My plan has stairs for the duplex coming in the middle of the house and I am planing to have a skylight above the stairs. I am hoping for enough light coming out of skylight. Also, wonder if skylight can be built to have ventilation?
Any suggestion welcome.

THe skylight we have does have some ventilation. It has an open area at the bottom of the light (not covered by glass) and only protected with mesh, to let hot air out. I think it is a good idea. But you have to think a little further about if you want to install AC for those rooms with skylight, then it will be ineffecient.

Because of the skylight in the center of the house, we have a lot of light and the house stays fairly cool most of the time. SInce one of our bathrooms was an interior bathroom (no way to provide windows), we provided a skylight, and that is so well light (better than the ones with windows) and also dries up very quickly, so clean up of that bathroom is always is easy.

My enginner is saying you cannot close the roof if first floor is to be constructed, but i understand from the forum it is possible if it is about 6" gap .
