Support Column Thickness

Hi,

I am constructing a G + 2 house in JP Nagar 7th phase. My Engineer has erected 12 columns of 6" by 18". I am concerned about column thickness. Is just 6 inches sufficient?
Please let me know.

Earlier it was 8 inches. Now it has been reduced to 6. All this was done after consulting the structural engineer. But still I am worried.

I think 6 is enough or you can go for 8" if you want which would be better.

Are you using cement block or clay bricks?

6" thk columns are used in case of solid block walls.you can use 6" think but make sure steel is take care accordingly.Main thing is to be carefull while poring of concrette in to the column since the spacing will be too less between steel rods.

Yes, I am using cement blocks.
My next question is since he has reduced thickness by 2", how much will I approx. save? ( considering there were will be 36 columns(G+2) in total and the height of each floor will be 10 ft.)

You are not only getting the benefit of the Concrete thickness . You are getting a huge space . But at time time of column concrete you must monitor the Quality of the Shuttering . So that it should not have any Bulge .
Having 6" column and bulged surface wont be helpful . And the main problem you are going to face is the verticality of the columns and the Slab Shuttering . You have to monitor the Above mentioned points .

I am going for 6" by 18" column size for Stilt + 3 construction. There are in total 15 columns and this would be constructed using solid blocks. The built up area\area under construction is 44 ft by 29 ft. I am trying to reduce weight wherever possible by using MS grills, Aluminum\uPVC windows, vitrified tiles etc.

Any alternatives to solid blocks for walls that do no have windows which is lighter ?
