Procedure for pillar construction.

Hi all,

I plan to construct a 1 BHK house on the ground floor of a 30x40 plot and leave rest area for car parking. I plan to construct a pillared house so that when i build a duplex(planning about this) on the upper floors, the home is solid in strength.
So, as pillar construction is the main important one, i wanted to know the detailed procedure on how to do this.

You have to put an isolated mat for an Isolated footing.

Hi Ramki,
First we would decide on pillar locations based on structural engineer. He would specify a mat size and rods to be used in that. mat is nothing but the rods arranged like a mesh of square size that will be put inside the pit you are making.
Once you make the pit size 3 inches more than mat size on all sides for concrete to hold the mat, you need to prepare the pit with 40mm jelly concrete for about 3-4 inches and punch the concrete to make the surface hard (dhimsu) . Later you put the mat inside the pit and give some stones or cover block to hold the mat 1.5 inches above so that concrete can penetrate below the mat also.
Pillar positioned on the mat and checked if it is aligned properly to the measurements. Later mat it is poured with concrete for about 15inch or 18 inch based on your plan and load.

below ground level these are items to be done, i feel pillars are only long tip of ice berg , lot of works happens below.
1) Column Pit Earth work
2) 4 inch PCC Base
3) Column RCC Foundation ( Mat, couple of feet of concrete pour depending on design ) ( Shuttering required)
3a) Column alignment and marking.
4) Column Pedestal RCC ( depends on design)
5) Column casting till plinth level ( Shuttering required)
6) Plinth beam foundation (Stone masonry or Concrete , Shuttering required)
7) Plinth beam ( RCC , connecting all columns, Shuttering required).
Typically Structural engineer gives the design of all these components. ( Steel frame assembly\ steel rods \ Concrete strength \ dimensions etc)

Thanks very much Bharath. Very nice description and easy understanding procedure for a layman like me.
So the concrete cement to be used in whole pillar construction from base to full pillar should be of 53 grade cement only?

Thanks very much Nivas. Some more doubts(according to the points mentioned by you):
1. Pit Earth work understood.
2. What is that PCC Base. What does PCC stands for and how is different from regular cement/concrete?
3. Foundation understood.
3a) understood
4) what is pedestal RCC?
5) Columns which is see outside - understood.
6) What is Plinth beam foundation?
7) SAme as above.

Hi Ramki,
Yes, you can use 53 grade for pillars and beams. But you can use ppc as well.In olden days only ppc was available for construction and buildings are still leak proof and strong. For plastering you should use ppc strictly. Make sure you use m20 minimum for pillars and beams. Usually m25 is specified. You can use the cement :sand:jelly mix ratio told in this forum for m20 and m25.
