Temp electricity connection which KV to choose?

Post by Iyyappan »

Hi All,

When applying temporary electricity connection for construction, BESCOM people asked me about what KV like 1kv or 2kv you want.

I don't have any bore well now, but planning to use small motor to pump the water from sump. And I need to run the machine which mixes the sand, jalli and cement (i dont know the name) for RCC works. So In this case, which amount of KV i need for temp connection. Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

for the RCC work, jalli cement mixing machines works on diesel systems. so no need to worry on this part.
for the small pumps(1/2 hp or- 1.0 hp) to use from sump to Overhead tanks or water curing normal rating of 1KV.

You need to consider the Power ratings required for the Welding machines, tile cutting, drilling, Polishing machines.
Also whether all those works happens simultaneously or one by one in sequence. Cross check with your vendors or
site engineer who co-ordinates the works to know the ratings and then choose the right KV.

Can we take 1kv initially and later can we take 2 kv for welding purpose?

You cannot do that. There is a procedure involved in converting the KV. Discuss with you architect and take the right KV. Else you will land up paying more later changing the KV

Thanks Naveen.

For permanent connection, I need 3KV/3 phase connection. So the kv for temp and permanent should be same?
Could you please clarify this?

need not be same. temp connection is only to facilitate the use of power tools and basic lighting to carry out the construction work.
when you go for permanent connection, you can take the capcity as per actual requirement.

Pl note that if you are going for a 3 phase meter later, the one you buy now for the single phase temporary connection will go waste (unless u plan to have a 2nd permanent connection for a separate house/room etc).

On the temporary connection front, it is advisable to take the connection on a higher side (if you are using a pump for a borewell, temporary lighting, etc.. and later you will have to add the welding requirements etc) to avoid being harassed by the BESCOM people. They just keep coming for inspection now and then and try to extract bribes by saying the rating is higher than your temporary connection. I am not sure if it makes sense to take a 3 phase temp connection considering that they would charge a bomb for it.

Discuss this point with your electrical contractor. He would have a way out for it.
